7 Signs Your Taxes Are Actually Fucked

Unopened letters, missing years, a balance nobody ever explained. Here's how to tell whether your tax situation is quietly getting worse.

Your taxes don't have to be a disaster to be fucked. They just have to be quietly getting worse while you're busy running your life. Here are seven signs that's happening right now.

1. There's a letter you haven't opened

IRS notices have deadlines printed on them. Most give you about 30 days to respond before the next, worse letter shows up. Ignoring one doesn't pause the clock — it just moves you further along a process that ends in a levy.

2. You're not sure how many years you've filed

If you have to think about it, that's the answer. Unfiled years don't quietly expire. The IRS can file a substitute return on your behalf — no deductions, no dependents, no credits — and then bill you for the result.

3. You owe a number nobody has ever explained

A balance is tax, penalties, and interest stacked over years. Plenty of people are paying on a figure that's wrong. You can't negotiate a number you don't understand.

4. Your paycheck or bank account got lighter without warning

That's a wage garnishment or a bank levy, and it means collections already started. It's the most urgent item on this list — and also one of the fastest to get released once somebody gets in front of it.

5. You pay yourself out of the business account and sort it out later

"Later" is how a manageable tax bill turns into a payroll tax problem, and payroll tax is the one the IRS will pursue you for personally.

6. Every April is a surprise

If you never know whether it's a refund or a bill until the return is finished, nobody is planning — they're just reporting. That's the difference between a preparer and an advisor.

7. Your last preparer has gone quiet

If the person who signed your return won't return a call, you're on your own for anything the IRS asks about it. That stops being theoretical the moment a notice arrives.

Two or more of these sound familiar? It isn't going to resolve itself. That's the part we fix.

we fix* what's already wrong —and keep next year from being worse.
